"Leeds United crashed to a shock 4-3 defeat in the pre-season friendly against Hamilton Academical at Douglas Park. United, who paraded five Internationals, could not match the skill, determination and scoring power of the part-time Scottish Second Division side." (Thanks to Helen Castle for her research into the teams and scorers and newspaper reports).
Paul Hegarty opened the scoring for the home side in the seventh minute and Neil Hood added a second in the twenty-fifth minute and "The Accies" were good value for their 2-0 half-time lead. Mick Bates opened the United's account four minutes into the second half, in which John (Sean) O'Neill replaced Peter Hampton at Left Back and Bobby McGinley came on for Jimmy Mann at Inside Left. It was only a temporary comeback as Neil Hood completed his hat-trick with strikes in the fifty-third and fifty-fifth minutes and United were struggling at 1-4 and over half an hour left on the clock. Fortunately for them they used the time to good effect, with Jimmy Mann reducing the arrears in the seventy-second minute, before being substituted and, with seven minutes left on the clock, Peter Lorimer made it 3-4 from the penalty spot.
